University of Basrah Studies Natural Radioactivity in Grains and Legumes

A master’s thesis was discussed in the Department of Physics at the College of Sciences, University of Basrah, titled “Natural Radioactivity in Local and Imported Grains and Legumes Using NaI Spectroscopy (Tl)

The thesis, authored by researcher Ahmed Sami Muhammad, involved measuring the concentrations of naturally occurring radioactive isotopes—uranium-238, thorium-232, and potassium-40—in several samples of local and imported grains and legumes. The laboratory measurements were conducted at the Nuclear Contamination Laboratory using a NaI (Tl) detector to detect the levels of radioactive isotopes in the samples.

The thesis aimed to identify the concentrations of naturally occurring radioactive isotopes in the samples, as well as to assess indicators of potential radiation risk to human health. The study’s results showed that all tested samples were within the permissible limits for use, confirming their safety in terms of natural radioactivity levels.
