The College of Science at the University of Basrah organized a seminar by postgraduate student Ayat Abd Al-Muttalib Basikh entitled “The Role of Genetic Factors and Gene Polymorphisms in the Pathogenicity of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.” The seminar aimed to explain the role of genetic factors in type 2 diabetes susceptibility and the effects of gene polymorphisms on beta-cell function, insulin secretion, and insulin action. It discussed the genes TCF7L2, KCNJ11, PPARG, FTO, and SMOC1 and their roles in susceptibility to type 2 diabetes.
